A disappearing patch starts with square edges and firm support. Screw a backer behind the hole, cut a tight plug, and prefill gaps with setting compound. Bed paper tape, feather two or three coats wider each time, and sand gently, chasing the light rather than brute force.
Skim coating turns pockmarked or textured surfaces into a soft canvas. Roll thinned compound, then pull it smooth with a wide knife, working in overlapping passes. Two or three cycles, with light sanding between, erase shadows and create a ceiling that accepts light gracefully.
If water ruined gypsum or framing moved dramatically, replacement saves time and gives better results. Score and remove damaged sheets, verify insulation and vapor control, and install new drywall with staggered seams. Use adhesive and screws, then finish joints carefully for a factory-smooth expanse.
